Instruction - Balance
Training
Take a second and try
something.
Stand up and close your eyes. Can you stand perfectly still or do you
feel the room spinning? Let’s say you felt pretty stable. Try this.
Stand on one leg, preferably your dominant leg, and close your eyes
again. How do you feel now?
Odds are you could not stand up without regaining your composure by
opening your eyes after more than 10 seconds. The brain has an uncanny
ability to sense the body’s position at all times. However our ability
to use our eyesight play a major role. As we age we rely more and more
on eyesight and less in the brains ability to process information needed
to keep us standing without falling over.
Balance training for both golf and exercise utilizes many “toys” or
unstable surfaces to train. Things like balance discs, boards and foam
rollers are all tools used to stress the body and bring back that
ability to balance with our brain not just our eyes.
Scroll through the website and look at these various devices and see if
any interest you. Just using any one of them on a regular basis is an
exercise itself. If not try the eyes closed drill every other day for 2
weeks. See if you can increase your time without falling or needing to
open your eyes.
