Instruction - Putting
Touch
As I mentioned I have made it a goal of
mine to become a “great” putter by the end of the year. The following
drill was taught to me by Tim Schrader and Neil Guess. They are teachers
for Bentley Golf and Camelback Golf Academy. The creativity in this
drill is so great because when you think of how easy it is you should be
able to do it the first time, but will you?
Place a ball about 2 inches away from
the cup to start. From there you must make 3 putts with these 3
distinctions. The first one must hit the back of the cup, pop up and
fall into the hole. The second one should go right into the middle of
the cup and the last you have to try and have it die on the front edge
and fall into the cup from their. This is all from 2 inches. Think it’s
easy? Try and do it in 3 putts. Once you can hit these putts you move to
4 or 5 inches and repeat, then 9/10 inches and so on. The goal is to
increase your arsenal of having different putts whenever you need them.
As Tim and Neil explained to me the reason you start from 2 or 3 inches
is because these are the putts you would consider a tap in putt. By
adding the three distinctions you develop a feel. As you progress from 2
inches back to 3 and 4 feet you instill the confidence to make 3 and 4
footers with a tap in mentality. I have gotten pretty good at the back
of the cup, middle, and dying putt techniques from 2- 12 inches and can
normally do them in a row.
